Apple already designs new generation MacBook Pro with the M4 chip

Last year, Apple introduced a new generation of MacBook Pro with the M3 chip, which recently made its way into the new MacBook Air. Meanwhile, the company is already working on a new MacBook Pro equipped with the yet-to-be-announced M4 chip.

This news was revealed by Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, stating that Apple has officially started the development of the new MacBook Pro based on the M4 chip. Details at the moment are quite vague, so it is not yet clear when we will see the new MacBook Pro.

"I didn't see a reason to switch to M2 or M3 Max. But maybe I'll buy the MacBook Pro M4, which, by the way, has entered official development," said Mark Gurman.

The current MacBook Pro was unveiled in October 2023. It was the first Apple device featuring the M3 chip, which shares the same 3-nanometer technology as the A17 Pro chip in the iPhone 15 Pro. Alongside the M3, Apple also released more powerful variants like the M3 Pro and M3 Max for high-performance versions of the MacBook Pro.

In addition to the MacBook Pro, the MacBook Air and iMac were also updated with the M3 chip. However, the Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro are yet to be upgraded to the M3. Apple may need at least another year to introduce its first computer based on the M4.

Rumors suggest that the M4 will be based on the Apple A18, the next chip for the iPhone 16. It is expected that both will have more Neural Engine cores to perform tasks related to artificial intelligence, which are anticipated to be implemented in iOS 18 and macOS 15. For comparison, the Neural Engine of the A17 Pro chip is capable of processing up to 35 trillion operations per second.
