WhatsApp will be compatible with other messengers

January 25, 2024  16:17

The team of the popular messenger WhatsApp is actively working on a new feature that will ensure the compatibility of WhatsApp with other messengers. As reported by WABetaInfo, in the latest beta version of WhatsApp, a hidden third-party chats section has been discovered.

In the new section, WhatsApp users will be able to communicate with people using competing messengers such as Telegram, Discord, Signal and Viber. According to WABetaInfo, the new feature is still only available for iOS developers.

The new feature must be activated separately, after which users can delete messengers they do not need.

The innovation is developed in accordance with the requirements of the European Union regarding the interoperability of messengers, which will become mandatory in the spring of 2024. The EU's Digital Markets Act requires the biggest messaging platforms to be compatible with each other so people don't have to install dozens of apps to communicate.

The exact launch date of the new feature is not yet known. WAbetaInfo assumes it will be implemented with the next update, as the law takes effect in March. It is also not known whether it will work in countries outside the EU.

Earlier it became known that WhatsApp will get a new interface with updated graphic design. Meta Corporation – the developer of the messenger – is already testing the interface, the first photo of which was published by data analyst Abhishek Yadav on his Twitter account.
