Google has started introducing Memory Saver modes in the Chrome browser for all users. The company announced these modes for Mac, Windows, Linux and Chromebooks back in December last year.

These modes can be found by going to Settings, then Performance. Then there is a description of the memory saving mode.

In this mode, Chrome frees up memory allocated to tabs that are not currently in use. This is to ensure that active tabs and other programs currently connected to your computer have more resources available and that Chrome's speed isn't slowed down. Inactive tabs become active when the user clicks on them, says the description of the new modes.

In power saving mode, Chrome saves battery power by limiting background activity and visuals as well as video frame rate. You can also choose a setting to activate this mode when the battery drops to 20 percent or when your laptop is running on battery power.

Google states that Chrome uses up to 30% less memory when memory saving mode is activated.
