Nike has unveiled the Air Max 1000, the company’s first sneakers almost entirely produced using 3D printing. The new model was developed in partnership with Zellerfeld, a company experienced in 3D-printed footwear. The sneakers were showcased to attendees at ComplexCon, which took place last weekend in Las Vegas.

In terms of design, the Air Max 1000 is a reimagined version of the Air Max 1, which debuted in 1987 as Nike’s first sneakers featuring an air cushion in the heel. This iconic feature has been retained in the Air Max 1000, although the air cushion itself was not 3D-printed. The rest of the sneakers were crafted using 3D printing technology.

By blending layers of varying densities and textures, the sole of the Air Max 1000 remains firm and supportive at the bottom, while the upper part of the shoe is more flexible and comfortable. This design allows the sneakers to be slipped on and off without the need for laces. The use of 3D printing also enabled Nike to achieve a unique contoured design that, according to the company, would be impossible to create using traditional footwear manufacturing methods.

Initially, Nike introduced the Air Max 1000 in a vibrant red color, but later showcased additional versions in white, blue, and black-green at the event. The first batch consists of 1,000 pairs, available for pre-order by attendees of the exhibition. Nike has yet to reveal plans for broader production of the Air Max 1000 or disclose the retail price of the new sneakers.
