Scanning QR codes in random places is not recommended, and you should also avoid downloading QR code scanning applications from third-party manufacturers, as both may cause security issues.

According to Sergey Bodrov, the head of the "Роскачества" digital expertise center, when scanning random QR codes placed on the street, users can activate the background download of virus programs on the smartphone, as well as launch other malicious activities.

“QR codes can be used to install software, reveal locations, and even create calendar events where social engineering content will be posted to encourage victims to take action (such as by clicking on a link). That's why scanning stickers at every corner is a potentially dangerous idea just out of curiosity,” Bodrov said.

The expert emphasized that the main danger of random QR codes is that it is impossible to know their content without scanning. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze indirect signs for security.

"If you're at the cash register in a store or at an exhibition and you see a small black square next to a product or exhibit, everything is clear. But if the QR code is placed on a wall in a public place or hidden in a secluded corner of the street, it is better not to take risks and not point the camera for scanning," explained Bodrov.

Also, according to him, it is strongly not recommended to download third-party applications for scanning QR codes on smartphones, as they often contain malicious functions. Most modern smartphones already have a built-in scanner from the factory, and phone cameras can scan both barcodes and QR codes.
