Scientists of the Yuri Gagarin State Technical University of Saratov have developed a system for the rapid detection of drones, which works by means of an acoustic track, reports the Russian "TASS" agency, referring to the press service of the university.
The authors note that one practical application of this development could be to protect private property from unauthorized surveillance or video recording by drones. The new system is well suited to detect a variety of civilian quadcopters weighing up to 200 grams, flying at altitudes of up to 100 meters and requiring no license to purchase.
The system consists of a network of weatherproof microphones, a server and specialized software for recording and analyzing audio signals. It will also have a notification system that will work via email and SMS. The authors note that this system allows simultaneous collection and processing of sound vibrations. It is planned to install the system along the perimeter of the guarded zone.
"The basic idea is to create a network of such systems to recognize sound vibrations. Network nodes can be wired or wireless, depending on the tasks and conditions. Different hardware configurations are also possible, which affect the system's working range and weather conditions requirements," said Maxim Balakin, head of the radio electronics and telecommunications department of the Institute of Electronic Technologies and Instrumentation of the same university, candidate of physical and mathematical sciences.
He also said that the noise of drones in the lower part of the spectrum is similar to the noise generated by the internal combustion engines of cars. During testing, the system they developed showed good results in recognizing the sounds of drones, including against the background of a noisy spectrum.
Earlier, the Russian "Kaysant" NGO had created a system for disrupting the operation of drones, the "Argus-Antidron", which looks like a hand-held anti-tank grenade launcher. The device is able to disrupt the operation of a number of drones and bring them down. The operating distance of the device is 1.5 km; it works for 1.5 hours with one charge.
