OpenAI is developing an internet search feature for its chatbot, ChatGPT. This algorithm will be capable of finding information of interest to users and providing links to sources, Bloomberg reported, citing its own insider source within the company, who also noted OpenAI's intention to compete in the web search arena with Google and Alphabet's search startup, Perplexity.

According to the report, ChatGPT will be able to incorporate information from the internet into its responses to user queries, along with links to sources such as Wikipedia and blog posts. Bloomberg also mentioned that one version of the product will be able to deliver relevant images alongside text responses when appropriate. For instance, if a user asks how to replace a door handle, the response might include an illustration demonstrating the process.

Earlier reports indicated OpenAI's intention to release a search product as early as February this year, but details about its functionality remained undisclosed. Official representatives from OpenAI declined to comment on this matter.

OpenAI aims to expand the capabilities of its AI-based chatbot amid escalating competition in this sector. Perplexity, a startup owned by Alphabet, has already gained popularity with its AI-based search system known for its accuracy and citation rates. Google also plans to rethink its search engine by incorporating AI features. It is expected that the company will unveil its plans and the future of the Gemini algorithms at the annual I/O conference, scheduled for next week.
