Agility Robotics introduces new version of its Digit robot: now it has a head and eyes, performs simple tasks

Agility Robotics has introduced a new version of the two-legged Digit robot. If the previous version, intended for storage and other work, did not have a head and eyes, the novelty has both, and has begun to look more like a human. The presence of two animated LED eyes is supposed to improve interaction with people, reports The Verge.

Agility Robotics introduced its headless robot in 2020. The company said the robot is useful in various industries, from logistics to industrial inspections. The robot can even be used as an "avatar" for a remote presence at a scene. In addition, the model had to perform some tasks on par with humans and take up about the same amount of space, so it is a little less than 180 cm tall and has two legs.

Adding a head and eyes to the new version of the robot is not purely cosmetic. A company representative told reporters that the sensor-equipped head would allow people to better understand Digit's actions: the robot's eyes will indicate important information, such as its intention to change direction or engage in a certain activity. In addition, the design of the robot's arms has been changed, so it will now be easier for the robot to pick up and move plastic containers, which are often used in warehouses.

However, while Digit's capabilities remain limited, the robot can walk, bend, climb stairs, and perform other simple actions. Its main task is to lift objects weighing up to 16 kg.

It's not yet known how much the robot will cost to businesses that would like to buy it, but Agility Robotics is launching an Agility Partner program that will give partners "a unique opportunity to build Digit's skills and capabilities." At first, only the participants of this initiative will be able to get the new version of the robot.
