Chinese military researchers have developed an artificial intelligence system that could revolutionize anti-submarine defense. Breakthrough research, published in August in the peer-reviewed journal Electronics Optics & Control, marks the potential end of the era of "invisible" submarines, which have long been a cornerstone of maritime deterrence strategies.

Revolutionary Detection Capabilities

As reported by SCMP, the anti-submarine warfare system, developed by senior engineer Meng Hao and his team from the China Helicopter Research and Development Institute, represents a fundamental shift from traditional submarine detection methods. Unlike conventional search patterns, the system operates as an intelligent ocean commander, integrating data from multiple sources, including sonar buoys deployed by helicopters, underwater sensors, radar systems, and even oceanographic data such as water temperature and salinity levels.

According to The Defense News, computer simulations have shown that the system achieves a detection and tracking rate of approximately 95 percent, even when submarines employ advanced stealth techniques. This represents a significant improvement over existing anti-submarine capabilities and could fundamentally alter the strategic balance of naval warfare.

The technology builds on China's broader investments in submarine detection systems. Earlier this year, Chinese researchers also developed AI-based torpedo guidance systems capable of distinguishing real submarines from decoy targets with 92.2 percent accuracy. These complementary technologies suggest that China is pursuing a comprehensive approach to neutralizing the stealth advantages of submarines.
