The outstanding Swiss scientist Niklaus Wirth, creator and leading designer of the Pascal and Modula-2 programming languages, has died at the age of 89. This was reported on the website of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).

According to the Association, the scientist passed away on January 1.

Niklaus Wirth developed a number of innovative computer languages, including EULER, ALGOL-W, MODULA and PASCAL, which became the basis for future computer languages, systems and architectural research.

In 1984, he was awarded the prestigious Turing Award for his contributions to the field of programming languages. The Pascal programming language became his most famous work.
