WhatsApp adds the ability to send documents to Meta AI

WhatsApp continues to expand its integration with Meta’s artificial intelligence tools. In the latest beta version of the app, iPhone users can now send documents directly to the Meta AI assistant for analysis.

The feature was discovered by researchers from the portal WABetaInfo in the WhatsApp for iOS beta build 26.20.10.72, available through TestFlight. A similar capability had previously appeared for some Android users.

What has changed

Until now, interaction with Meta AI in WhatsApp was fairly limited. The AI assistant could process text messages, photos, and videos, but it did not support PDF files, spreadsheets, presentations, or other document formats. Users had to manually copy text or send screenshots instead, making the process far less convenient.

A new option has now appeared in the attachment menu, allowing files to be sent directly into a chat with Meta AI. After a document is uploaded, the AI assistant can:

• analyze the entire contents;
• generate summaries and concise overviews;
• answer questions about the text;
• assist with information processing and task-solving.

Availability and rollout

The feature is still being tested and is not yet available to all users. The gradual rollout began on Android and has now expanded to iOS. Meta expects the update to make its AI assistant significantly more useful in both everyday and professional use cases.

Industry observers note that this is an important step in improving the competitiveness of Meta AI against tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini, both of which have long supported document analysis features.
