Giant piloted transformer robot GD01 unveiled with a $574,000 price tag

Unitree Robotics has introduced one of its most ambitious machines yet: the GD01, a full-size piloted transformer robot designed for real-world operation rather than just demonstrations.

Known primarily for its quadruped robots and humanoid platforms, the Chinese robotics company is now moving into an entirely new category — large-scale human-operated robotic vehicles.

A Full-Size Robot With a Human Pilot Inside

The GD01 stands nearly twice the height of an average person and features a built-in cockpit that allows a human operator to directly control the machine from inside.

One of the robot’s defining features is its ability to transform between two different movement modes:

• a humanoid-style two-legged configuration
• a four-legged mode designed for greater stability and mobility

According to the company, the lightweight structural design keeps the total weight of the robot — including the pilot — below 500 kilograms.

More Than Just a Walking Machine

Although GD01 is primarily positioned as a transport platform for people, its capabilities extend far beyond simple mobility.

The robot is reportedly able to:

• function as a transportation vehicle
• navigate difficult terrain
• assist in demolition work
• break through small structures and walls

Demonstration footage has already shown the machine smashing through lightweight constructions, highlighting its potential for industrial, rescue, and heavy-duty operational roles.

The ability to switch between bipedal and quadrupedal movement could make the platform especially versatile in environments where traditional vehicles struggle.

A New Direction for Consumer Robotics

Unitree appears to be positioning GD01 not as a futuristic concept, but as a practical robotic system intended for real deployment.

The company has already built a strong reputation through robots such as the humanoid Unitree G1, Unitree H1, and quadruped platforms like Unitree Go2 and Unitree B2.

Many of the balancing and locomotion technologies developed for those machines now appear to be carrying over into this much larger piloted platform.

Price and Availability

The GD01 is priced at approximately $574,000.

While that figure sounds enormous by consumer standards, it is relatively low for a full-scale piloted robotic system capable of dynamic movement and terrain traversal.

Unitree has not yet announced an exact release schedule, but the company says the robot is already prepared for mass production — a sign that it sees serious commercial potential in the category.
