Professor Viktor Krishtop explained that while vitamins can indeed break down during heating, this depends on temperature, not on the microwaves themselves. In fact, microwave cooking can preserve more nutrients than traditional boiling, since it heats food faster and requires less water. For example, vegetables prepared in a microwave retain more vitamins than those cooked in water for long periods.
Some people think baby food heated in a microwave becomes harmful. This is untrue — microwaves do not change the chemical composition of food. However, heating can be uneven, so it’s important to stir the food thoroughly after warming and let it cool slightly to avoid hot spots that could burn a child’s mouth.
Another popular misconception is that microwave-heated water is unsafe. The concern stems from superheating: in very smooth containers, water can reach boiling temperature without visible bubbling, then erupt suddenly when disturbed. Physicists recommend a simple fix — place a wooden stick, spoon, or teabag in the cup before heating. These objects create nucleation sites that allow bubbles to form safely. So yes, it’s perfectly fine to heat water for tea — just handle it with care.
