Boston Dynamics' Atlas humanoid robot has made remarkable progress in its skills. Previously, the robot proved to be a good athlete by doing push-ups. Now Atlas "works" in the warehouse of the automobile factory. In a video released by the company, it can be seen how the robot skillfully and quickly moves engine parts and arranges them in different racks. Moreover, the manufacturer claims that Atlas operates completely autonomously, without "remote controlled movements".
According to Boston Dynamics, “the robot is able to detect and respond to changes in the environment (such as moving devices) and operational disruptions (such as lid misplacement, slipping, colliding with an object in the environment) using vision, force and proprioceptive (feeling of the position of one's body parts relative to each other and in space) sensors.
In addition to performing autonomous tasks, the video shows the robot's impressive adaptive (and durable) movements, allowing it to rotate around its waist. This action minimizes unnecessary movements, saving valuable time.
Boston Dynamics' insistence that the robot is fully autonomous is aimed at other humanoid robot companies that have tried to mislead the public. For example, at the Tesla presentation, the Optimus robots were indeed controlled by artificial intelligence, but in some cases they were assisted by remote operators.
As with competitors such as Figure, Tesla and Apptronik, the first practical use of a biped robot was in a car factory, which is not surprising since the auto industry has been at the forefront of factory automation for decades. Two weeks ago, Boston Dynamics, owned by Hyundai, announced a partnership with the Toyota Research Institute.
