The thinnest and the lightest Galaxy Fold: Samsung introduces Galaxy Z Fold 5 smartphone

July 26, 2023  20:18

At the Galaxy Unpacked event held today, the South Korean company Samsung Electronics presented the new Galaxy Z Fold5 folding smartphone, which, according to the manufacturer, is the thinnest and lightest smartphone ever released in the Galaxy Fold series. Samsung has also addressed a design flaw by eliminating the gap between the two halves of the body that emerges when the smartphone is folded.

The issue had raised concerns about the smartphone's durability, as dust, sand, dirt and other particles can enter into the phone's internal display through the gap. According to some users, that gap on the last generation Galaxy Z Fold4 was even bigger than that of the Galaxy Z Fold3. As promised by the company, the Galaxy Z Fold5 closes completely when folded, leaving no gap.

The smartphone has a 7.6-inch internal flexible AMOLED display with QXGA+ (2176 x 1812 pixels) resolution and 120Hz refresh rate, an external 6.2-inch AMOLED display with 2316x904 pixel resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. Both screens are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 glass.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 has a 10 MP front camera and a 4 MP built-in camera, as well as a triple main camera (50 MP, 12 MP and 10 MP). The battery capacity is 4400mAh with support for 25W wired, 15W wireless and 4.5W wireless reverse charging. The phone also has a side fingerprint scanner, is waterproof (IPX8), and has stereo speakers.

The smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen2 SoC processor, has 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256,512GB or 1TB of UFS 4.0 built-in storage. Android 13 operating system and One UI 5.1.1 user interface are installed on the smartphone.

The dimensions of the phone when folded are 154.9 x 67.1 x 13.4 mm and 154.9 x 129.9 x 6.1 mm when unfolded. The smartphone weighs 253 grams, has 5G, 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 6E (2.4 and 5 GHz), Bluetooth 5.3, USB Type-C and NFC support.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 pre-orders will start today in several countries. The open sale will start from August 11. The 256GB built-in version starts at $1,800 and the 1TB version costs $2,160. Black, purple and gold color options are available.
