New smartphones and a new tablet after 11 years: What devices has Google introduced?

Google presented three new devices at the Google I/O 2023 conference held yesterday: the Pixel Fold and Pixel 7a smartphones, as well as the Pixel Tablet. All devices have interesting characteristics, although the Pixel Fold is considered even late.

Pixel Fold

Google is perhaps the last company to produce a smartphone with a foldable screen, competitors have had such phones for a long time. The Pixel Fold opens 180 degrees, which makes the screen size 7.6 inches. The screen is an ultra-thin OLED with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. This is considered the thinnest foldable smartphone in the market. At least, that's what the manufacturer claims.

The Pixel Fold has five cameras, three on the back, one inside for selfies, and one inside for video calls. The main camera is 48 MP.

The Pixel Fold includes features found in the Pixel line of phones, but also has features unique to the Pixel Fold, such as dual-screen live translation, which allows the user to communicate in another language with the help of translations with voice and text on the external display quickly.

When open, different parts of the screen can be used at the same time, for example, you can make a video call with one part of the screen, and check emails with the other.

The smartphone is released in two colors: black and white. Dimensions are: 158.7x139.7x 5.8 mm, weight: 283 grams, battery capacity: 4821 m/H. The version of Pixel Fold with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of built-in memory will cost $1,799, and the 12 GB/512 GB version will cost $1,919.

Pixel 7a

The other novelty is the Pixel 7a smartphone, which looks similar to the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro and has almost all the features you'd expect from a smartphone in this line: a better display, an advanced camera, and a longer-lasting battery. But the Pixel 7a has a Tensor G2 processor and a TItan M2 security chip that provide excellent performance and new artificial intelligence features.

The smartphone has a 6.1-inch OLED, HDR screen with an image frequency of 90 Hz and a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, the glass is Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The novelty has two cameras: the main one is 64 MP, and the other one is 13 MP ultra-wide angle.

The Pixel 7a has 8GB of RAM and 128GB of built-in storage, as well as wireless charging, a first for an A-series phone. The dimensions of the smartphone are: 152x72.9x9 mm, weight: 193.5 grams. Battery capacity: 4385 m/H.

The smartphone comes in several colors and costs $499.

Pixel Tablet

Google also introduced the Pixel Tablet at the Google I/O 2023 event. This is the ideological successor of the Nexus 7 tablet released in 2012. For eleven years, Google hasn't introduced any new devices to the tablet market (except for the 2018 Pixel Slate, which ran Chrome OS instead of Android).

The Pixel Tablet is built on the Tensor G2 single-chip platform, equipped with the Titan M security chip. It received an IPS screen with a diagonal of 11 inches and a resolution of 2560x1600 pixels.

The tablet has two cameras, one on the front and the other on the back. Moreover, both are exactly the same with 8MP sensors, F/2.0 aperture lenses and support for Full HD video recording. There is a fingerprint scanner (built into the power key), three microphones and four speakers, a USB 3.2 Type-C port, UWB, Wi-Fi 802.11ax and Bluetooth 5.2 support.

The battery capacity is unknown, but Google states that the device works up to 12 hours in video streaming mode. Tablet dimensions are: 258x169x8.1 mm, weight: 493 grams.

The price of the device in the USA is 500 dollars, and in Europe it is estimated at 680 euros. This is the price of the version with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of built-in memory, while the 8 GB/256 GB version costs 800 euros. Additionally, sales will begin on June 20.
