NASA creates a snake-like robot to explore other worlds

Scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) have created a snake-like robot (Exobiology Extant Life Surveyor, EELS). It is designed to explore and map hard-to-reach areas of Earth, the Moon, Saturn's moon Enceladus, and other worlds in the Solar System.

The robot was tested in sandy, snowy and icy terrains. The tests were carried out, in particular, at JPL's test field, which simulates the Martian landscape, at a "robot playground" at a ski resort in Southern California, and at an indoor skating rink.
