Even if you hardly install new apps or save photos, free space on your smartphone still decreases over time. This is a normal phenomenon linked to the accumulation of system data, explains Andrey Rybnikov, Senior Lecturer at RTU MIREA.
What exactly takes up space
Almost every app creates a cache—temporary files that help programs launch faster and avoid reloading the same information repeatedly. Messengers store photos, videos, voice messages, and thumbnails. Browsers cache elements from visited pages. Navigation services retain previously viewed maps. Over time, the volume of such data can reach tens of gigabytes.
Beyond the cache, apps accumulate their own data: search history, logs, user preferences, offline content, and backups. As a result, an app that took up a few hundred megabytes after installation can grow several times larger over a year of active use. This happens particularly quickly with messengers, social networks, and video services.
Additional "hidden" files
When working with photos, smartphones store not only the originals. They also create smaller copies, index the gallery for search, and recognise faces, text, and objects. All these background files remain in internal storage.
Space is also needed during operating system updates. The device downloads installation files, temporarily stores components, and creates data to complete the process. Most of this information is automatically deleted later, but not always immediately.
What to do
If free space is running out quickly, the expert advises opening the storage section in settings and checking not only the app sizes but also the volume of accumulated data. Particular attention should be paid to messengers, browsers, navigation tools, and video services. It is also helpful to disable automatic downloads of unnecessary files and delete outdated offline content.
In brief
Smartphone storage quietly fills up due to app caches, saved media files, gallery system data, and temporary update files. Messengers, browsers, and navigation services are especially active in accumulating such data. To free up space, it is worth regularly checking the storage section and clearing caches and unnecessary offline content.
