Why do led lamps glow after being turned off and is it dangerous?

LED lamps sometimes continue to emit a faint glow even after the light is turned off, which can be unsettling or annoying. This is not mysterious but rather a technical nuance related to the lamp’s design or wiring. Here are six causes of this effect and how to fix them.

What Causes the Glow

LED lamps are complex devices containing diodes and electronics, including current converters and capacitors. These components can store charge or react to minimal currents, causing residual glow (5–20 seconds) or constant low-level illumination. Here are the reasons.

Residual Glow Due to a Capacitor

An LED power system contains an AC-DC converter with a smoothing capacitor. After switching off, it retains enough charge to produce a faint glow. This is common in budget lamps that lack protective diodes or switches. The glow disappears once the capacitor fully discharges.

Solution: replace the lamp with a model that has an improved power circuit. Incorrect Switch Installation

A switch should break the live wire, not the neutral wire. If reversed, 220 V remains at the lamp input and charges the capacitor, causing a faint glow.

Solution: an electrician can reverse the wires in the junction box, routing the live wire to the switch and the neutral wire to the lamp. Switch with a Backlight

Switches with an indicator (a small LED that glows when the light is off) allow a small current to pass through the circuit. This is enough to charge the capacitor and produce glow.

Dimmers designed for incandescent bulbs are incompatible with most LED lamps, which usually support only on/off modes. A dimmer allows current to pass even when “off,” causing glow. The same applies to touch-sensitive switches.

In apartment buildings, the neutral wire may carry voltage (20–30 V) due to uneven load distribution. You can check this using a test screwdriver.

In older homes with poor insulation, parasitic induction may occur. If live and neutral wires run close together, the magnetic field from the live wire induces a current in the neutral wire, causing the glow.

This glow is not dangerous for the lamp. It will not overheat or fail. However, it indicates issues in the wiring that may lead to breakdowns or short circuits. These should not be ignored.
