32-bit and 64-bit operating systems: What’s the difference and which one should you choose?

When installing an operating system, such as Windows, users often face the choice between a 32-bit and a 64-bit version. This choice can be confusing, especially if it’s unclear how these architectures differ and how they affect computer performance. In this article, we’ll break down what bitness is, how 32- and 64-bit systems differ, how to determine the bitness of your installed OS, and which version is best to choose.

What is bitness?

Bitness determines how many bits of information the processor can process in one clock cycle. Simply put, it’s a characteristic that affects the amount of data the processor, operating system, and programs can work with.

32-bit processors process 32 bits per cycle. These processors were popular in the past but today are found mostly on the secondary market and in outdated devices. 64-bit processors process 64 bits per cycle, providing higher performance and support for larger amounts of data. Almost all modern PC processors use 64-bit architecture.

Similarly, operating systems and programs are also divided into 32- and 64-bit versions. The history of 64-bit OSes began with their widespread adoption following the appearance of 64-bit processors. The first consumer 64-bit system was Mac OS X Snow Leopard in 2009, followed by Windows.

32- and 64-bit systems: key differences

The main difference between 32- and 64-bit operating systems lies in their ability to work with RAM (random access memory):

32-bit OSes: support up to 4 GB of RAM (2³² bytes). Even if more RAM is installed, the system will only detect and use 4 GB (and in practice, about 3.2–3.5 GB due to system limitations). 64-bit OSes: theoretically support up to 16.8 million terabytes of RAM (2⁶⁴ bytes). In practice, limits depend on the Windows edition (for example, Windows 11 Home supports up to 128 GB, while Pro supports up to 2 TB), but this still makes 64-bit systems far more scalable.

In addition:

Program compatibility: 64-bit OSes can run both 64-bit and 32-bit applications, separating them into Program Files (for 64-bit) and Program Files (x86) (for 32-bit). Meanwhile, 32-bit OSes are incompatible with 64-bit programs. Performance: 64-bit systems use modern processor resources more efficiently, delivering higher performance, especially in multitasking and resource-intensive software. There are two ways to determine the bitness of your operating system:

Quick way through File Explorer: Open the drive where Windows is installed (usually C:). If you see Program Files and Program Files (x86) folders, the system is 64-bit. If there is only Program Files, the system is 32-bit. Through Windows settings: Right-click the Start menu and select System. In the Device Specifications section, look for System type, where bitness is indicated (for example, “64-bit Operating System”). Which is better: 32-bit or 64-bit?

The answer depends on your computer’s specs and your needs:

Choose a 32-bit OS if: You have an old computer with a 32-bit processor and no more than 4 GB of RAM. You use legacy hardware that doesn’t support 64-bit drivers. However, keep in mind that such systems are limited in scalability, don’t support modern software, and offer lower performance. Choose a 64-bit OS in all other cases: Modern processors (Intel Core, AMD Ryzen, etc.) and more than 4 GB of RAM require a 64-bit system to fully realize their potential. 64-bit OSes ensure compatibility with most programs, including 32-bit ones, thanks to the two Program Files directories. If an application is available in both versions, the 64-bit one is preferable — it is more stable and efficient.

Exception: drivers. They must strictly match the OS bitness, since they’re written for specific instructions. Make sure 64-bit drivers are available for your hardware before installing.

In short…

The choice between a 32- and 64-bit operating system in 2025 is obvious: the 64-bit OS is the best option for most users, thanks to its support for larger amounts of RAM, high performance, and full compatibility with modern software. 32-bit systems are only suitable for outdated PCs with limited resources, but using them restricts the computer’s capabilities and prevents running 64-bit programs. If your computer supports 64-bit architecture (and that’s practically all devices released after 2010), choose 64-bit Windows for maximum efficiency and scalability. If necessary, upgrade your hardware to unlock the full potential of a modern OS.
