Apple announces major OS rebranding: iOS 26 to replace iOS 19

Apple is preparing a significant overhaul of its operating system naming scheme, shifting from sequential version numbers to a new format based on the year following the release. According to Bloomberg, instead of the expected iOS 19, the company will launch iOS 26—with iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26 adopting the same structure. The official announcement is expected during WWDC on June 9, 2025.

Why the Rebranding?

The goal is to unify the naming across all Apple platforms, eliminating confusion caused by inconsistent version numbers. For example, iOS 18 currently coexists with macOS 15 and watchOS 11, which can be confusing for users and developers. Inspired by the naming strategies of automakers and Microsoft (e.g., Windows 95, 98), Apple aims to make branding simpler, more logical, and modern.

What’s Changing in iPadOS?

Beyond the renaming, Apple plans to make iPadOS more productivity-focused, especially for office and professional use. Expected improvements include:

Enhanced multitasking: A simplified interface for handling multiple apps, including a refined Stage Manager. Office app support: Deeper integration with Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, and better compatibility with Microsoft Office. New Apple Intelligence features: Smart tools for task automation, document processing, and scheduling.

Visual Redesign Inspired by visionOS

This rebranding will coincide with the biggest UI overhaul since iOS 7 in 2013 and macOS Big Sur in 2020. According to Bloomberg sources, Apple is adopting a unified design language across platforms, drawing inspiration from visionOS, the system powering Vision Pro.
