Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has explained why future AirPods will feature built-in cameras. According to him, this isn’t about photography but rather new functionalities based on infrared sensors, MacRumors reports.

How Cameras Will Change AirPods

Tiny cameras in the earbuds will serve two main purposes:

Enhancing Spatial Audio The earbuds will sync with the Apple Vision Pro headset to create a more immersive surround sound experience. For example, if a user turns their head while watching a video in Vision Pro, the sound source in that direction will become more prominent, enhancing the sense of presence. Gesture Control Cameras will enable users to control devices with hand gestures. This will provide a new level of interaction with AirPods and Apple’s ecosystem. When to Expect AirPods with Cameras

According to Kuo, if production timelines remain unchanged, the earbuds could launch in 2026 or 2027. At the end of January, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman confirmed that Apple is actively developing AirPods with infrared cameras.

This means that the new AirPods won’t just be an audio device but an interactive accessory for augmented reality.
