Apple plans to move all iPhone production for the US market from China to India by late 2026, driven by rising costs and supply chain diversification needs, per the Financial Times.

Apple’s Response to Costs

New cost pressures have prompted Apple to adjust its manufacturing strategy. CEO Tim Cook noted that iPhones sold in the US are increasingly made in India, while most iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches come from Vietnam. In March 2025, Apple airlifted iPhones from India and China to the US to meet demand. Without these changes, iPhone prices could have risen significantly.

Foxconn’s Bengaluru Facility

Foxconn’s $2.6 billion plant near Bengaluru Airport, spanning 300 acres, is set to produce 20 million iPhones annually. Testing began recently, with initial production of iPhone 16 and 16e models starting soon. The facility, supported by Karnataka’s government with infrastructure and incentives, will employ up to 50,000 workers by December 2027.

Tata Electronics’ Role

Tata Electronics has started iPhone production at a new Tamil Nadu plant, while Foxconn prepares shipments from Bengaluru in May. Tata and Foxconn operate five iPhone factories in India, boosting India’s share of global iPhone production to 18%. Tata’s output grew 180% in 2024 to ₹40,000 crore, with exports up 125% to ₹31,000 crore, employing 31,000 workers.
