Authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) plan to launch air cabs in Dubai by 2026. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, emir of Dubai and prime minister of the UAE, announced on Twitter that the UAE government has approved a project of flying cab stations that will start operating in the city within three years.

Attached to the post, the emir of Dubai also posted a promotional video demonstrating the operation of air cabs.

According to the Associated Press, Ahmed Bahrozyan, director general of the Dubai Department of Roads and Transportation Licensing Agency, revealed details of the project on a local radio station. According to the official, the project is still in its early stages and the UAE government has not yet selected an air cab supplier for use in Dubai:

Bahrozyan said the city plans to build four air cab stations: at Dubai International Airport, downtown, on the artificial island of Palma Jumeirah and at the port. Each station will consist of two launch pads and four charging stations.

According to him, at the first stage the UAE authorities plan to use manned flying cabs, that is, it will have a pilot and will be able to carry up to four passengers. Previously, the authorities of Dubai considered the possibility of using self-driving air taxis, but it is still in the testing phase.

The official added that the cost of a ride in a flying cab will be comparable to a ride in a regular limousine, which means that a flying cab is about 30% more expensive than a regular one.
