Xiaomi introduces smart camera capable of detecting unusual behavior

Xiaomi has officially launched its new home security camera, the Smart Camera 4 Max AI Zoom Edition, which was previously available only to a limited number of crowdfunding backers. The device is now available for general purchase in China at 799 yuan (approximately $120).

Designed for more than just recording, the camera offers advanced monitoring features powered by artificial intelligence. It incorporates a dual-lens system, 4K resolution support, and an array of tools to analyze indoor events.

Two sensors instead of one: Xiaomi expands home surveillance capabilities

The defining feature of the Smart Camera 4 Max AI Zoom Edition is its dual-camera setup. One module features a 12-megapixel telephoto lens, while the second uses an 8-megapixel ultra-wide sensor. Both utilize fast f/1.6 optics, helping retain fine detail under low-light conditions.

The camera records video in 4K resolution and features a zoom system combining 3x optical zoom with up to 12x hybrid zoom. For pitch-black environments, it offers a full-color night vision mode powered by ten infrared LEDs.

The mechanical design allows near-total coverage of the surrounding room: the housing rotates 360 degrees horizontally and 180 degrees vertically. Xiaomi notes that the pan-and-tilt mechanism operates roughly 30% faster than that of the previous Smart Camera C700 model.

AI-powered surveillance: fall detection and intelligent footage search

A highlight of the new camera is its AI Care feature set. Driven by an onboard artificial intelligence processor, the camera evaluates events in real time and flags specific scenarios.

The system can detect human falls, monitor prolonged inactivity, and spot unusual pet behavior. Additionally, Xiaomi built in a feature to track time children spend studying.

The camera also introduces an intelligent archive search function. Users no longer need to manually scrub through hours of footage; instead, they can enter plain-language search queries to find specific moments.

Driving the on-device processing is a quad-core processor delivering up to 3 TOPS of AI performance—roughly three times the computing power of the Smart Camera C700, according to Xiaomi.

Wi-Fi 6, hardware-level privacy protection, and gesture controls

For connectivity, the device supports Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3. Users can also insert microSD cards up to 256GB for local storage.

Xiaomi integrated a proprietary security chip to encrypt data and lower the risk of private video leaks. The camera also supports two-way audio communication and allows users to control select functions via hand gestures.

With these additions, the Xiaomi Smart Camera 4 Max AI Zoom Edition shifts from a basic security camera into an active smart home component capable of analyzing its environment and helping users manage their space.
