Why you shouldn't wait for the iPhone 18? Apple has decided to save significantly on base models

TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed new details about the iPhone 18 lineup. According to his data, the company will significantly limit the amount of RAM in the next generation's base models, which came as a surprise to many experts.

How much RAM the new iPhones will get

The standard iPhone 18 and the budget iPhone 18e model (which is rumored to be released in spring 2027) will be equipped with just 9 GB of RAM. This is only a small increase from the 8 GB in current base iPhones. Previously, many had expected a jump to 12 GB.

Apple has opted for a configuration of six 1.5 GB memory chips paired with the new A20 processor. According to Kuo, the reasons for this decision were the high cost of components and supply chain constraints.

What the new processor will deliver

Despite the RAM savings, the A20 chip, manufactured using TSMC's 2nm process, is expected to provide a noticeable performance boost:

• Approximately 15% more powerful CPU
• Up to 30% better energy efficiency compared to the A19
• Improved performance of AI features

The flagship iPhone 18 Pro models and Apple's first foldable smartphone (currently known as the iPhone Ultra) will receive a more advanced configuration — 12 GB of RAM and the A20 Pro processor.

When to expect the new models

The main iPhone 18 lineup is expected traditionally in the fall of 2026. The budget iPhone 18e, if the information is confirmed, will arrive later — in spring 2027.

Apple's decision to limit RAM in its base models appears to be an attempt to keep device costs as low as possible amid expensive AI components and new displays. At the same time, the company traditionally tries to maintain a balance between price and user experience.
