Japanese company Toto, known worldwide for its high-tech toilets and sanitary ware, is actively entering the semiconductor business amid the artificial intelligence boom. The company announced a $190 million investment in expanding production of components for chip manufacturing.
An unexpected player in the AI supply chain
Although for most consumers Toto is primarily known for its smart toilets, the company has been working in the semiconductor industry for nearly 40 years (since 1988). Its main product in this area is electrostatic wafer holders (electrostatic chucks). These high-precision ceramic platforms are used at key stages of chip production to hold wafers in place and precisely control temperature.
Such components are in particularly high demand for manufacturing modern processors, memory, and accelerators for artificial intelligence systems.
Why Toto is successful
The company's main competitive advantage is its long-standing expertise in high-precision ceramics. The same material used in premium sanitary ware is also used to create components for microelectronics. This has allowed Toto to successfully diversify its business and establish itself in the global supply chain for the AI industry.
Market reaction
Investors reacted positively to the news. Following the investment announcement, Toto's shares rose 11% in a single trading session. Previously, the company's stock had already gained about 18% amid news of its involvement in supplying the artificial intelligence market.
In brief
Toilet manufacturer Toto is investing $190 million to expand production of chip components. For nearly 40 years, the company has been making electrostatic wafer holders that are critically important in manufacturing AI chips. The AI boom has transformed Toto from a niche player into a notable supplier to the semiconductor industry, which has had a positive impact on its share price.
