Will Siri become a full-fledged chatbot? Apple is building a new app with chat history and auto-deletion

Apple is reportedly preparing a major overhaul of its voice assistant. According to Bloomberg, the company plans to unveil a completely redesigned version of Siri at WWDC 2026, transforming it into a standalone application much closer in functionality to modern AI chatbots such as ChatGPT.

What will change in Siri

The new Siri app will reportedly support long-form conversations with saved chat history. Users will be able to create new chats, upload files for analysis, and seamlessly switch between voice and text communication.

The interface is expected to resemble modern chatbot apps, featuring a dedicated conversation screen and a list of previous chats similar to Apple’s Messages app. Apple is also said to be developing a new universal gesture that would allow users to instantly launch Siri from anywhere within the system.

Privacy remains the main focus

Apple is reportedly placing heavy emphasis on user privacy, as it traditionally does across its ecosystem. The new Siri will include automatic chat history deletion, allowing users to choose whether conversations are erased after 30 days, after one year, or not deleted at all.

According to sources familiar with the project, Apple plans to process requests through its own private cloud infrastructure so that user data does not need to be shared with third-party developers, including Google, for training AI models such as Gemini.

Apple’s cautious approach

Despite the scale of the update, Apple reportedly remains cautious about the new version. Even after its official launch in fall 2026, the upgraded Siri is expected to retain beta status.

Test builds of iOS 27 already reportedly include a dedicated toggle that allows users to completely disable the new assistant experience if they prefer.
