Trust your finances to an AI? ChatGPT can now connect directly to bank accounts

OpenAI has taken a major step into personal finance. The company has launched ChatGPT Finance, a new feature that allows users to connect real bank accounts and analyze personal spending with the help of artificial intelligence.

How it works

Through Plaid — a platform that supports more than 12,000 financial institutions across the United States — users can securely link their bank accounts to ChatGPT.

Once connected, a dedicated financial dashboard appears inside the chatbot interface, showing:

• All income and expenses;
• Active subscriptions;
• Upcoming payments;
• An overall picture of the user’s financial situation.

The biggest change is that ChatGPT can now answer questions using a person’s actual financial data rather than offering only general advice. Users can ask things like where most of their money is going this month, which subscriptions could be canceled, or whether saving for a vacation by September is realistic.

Availability and security

At launch, the feature is available only to U.S. subscribers of the ChatGPT Pro plan, both on the web and in the iOS app.

OpenAI says users can disconnect their accounts at any time and fully erase financial data from the AI’s memory whenever they choose.

According to the company, more than 200 million users already ask ChatGPT for budgeting and financial advice every month. With direct account integration, those recommendations could become far more accurate and personalized.

New opportunities — and new concerns

On one hand, the feature could become a powerful tool for people who want a clearer understanding of their finances. On the other hand, connecting banking information to a powerful AI system raises serious questions about privacy and security.
