Unannounced Google Gemini Model Spotted in Silent Testing on LM Arena

A previously unannounced Google model appears to be undergoing silent testing on LM Arena. Users are reporting result quality that significantly surpasses the current version of Gemini 3 Flash—a pattern that has become familiar ahead of major AI releases.

A Quiet Update on the Leaderboard 

On May 2, AI observers detected unusual activity on LM Arena—a public platform where users conduct blind comparisons of language model responses. A model listed under the existing "Gemini 3 Flash" name was producing results "two levels above" the known version, according to user @marmaduke091 in a post on X. Testing Catalog, which tracks model deployments, confirmed the appearance of a new Gemini Flash variant on the leaderboard, noting that its "performance is closer to the current 3.1 Pro than to the current 3 Flash."

Google has not confirmed the identity of the model. Observers have speculated it could be designated as 3.1 Flash, 3.2 Flash, or even 3.5 Flash. References corresponding to the Gemini 3.2 family have appeared in Arena leaderboard data and early API logs since March, while the prediction market Polymarket has noted "leaks revealing hidden testing of Gemini 3.2 Flash on LM Arena leaderboards and API strings."

This silent testing approach mirrors previous industry practices. OpenAI similarly tested models on Arena under existing names—which later turned out to be new GPT variants—only for an official launch to follow shortly after. Updates to Gemini, Android, and Chrome are expected to be unveiled at the upcoming conference.

Preparing for the Transition 

In a move confirming an imminent generational shift in models, Google notified Vertex AI customers that Gemini 2 Flash and Flash-Lite will be decommissioned on June 1, 2026, with workloads being transitioned to new models. On April 24, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian teased a "new version... very, very soon," further fueling expectations that Google I/O could serve as the platform for the official debut of Gemini 3.2.
