Computer doesn’t recognize headphones: Causes and how to fix it

January 28, 2026  16:05

Plugged in your headphones, but there’s no sound? Or your PC doesn’t detect them at all? This happens quite often with both wired and wireless headsets. Most of the time, the issue can be solved in 5–10 minutes, but sometimes you need to dig into settings or drivers. Here’s a step-by-step guide to why your computer may not see your headphones and what to do.

Wireless Headphones: Most Common Causes

Bluetooth headsets are usually trickier than wired ones. Here’s what to check first:

  1. Headphones are discharged or not in pairing mode
The most common cause is simply that the headphones aren’t in pairing mode or are low on battery. Many models don’t switch to pairing automatically—you may need to press a button on the case or the headset itself. Make sure the indicator blinks (blue/white or as specified in the manual) and the battery is at least 20–30% charged.
  2. Headphones are already connected to another device
Most headsets don’t support multipoint (simultaneous connection to multiple devices). If they are linked to your phone nearby, they might not detect the computer.
    What to do:
  • Disconnect the headphones from your phone (Settings → Bluetooth → select the device → “Forget” or “Disconnect”), or
  • Reset the headphones to factory settings (usually by holding a button on the case for 10–20 seconds or following the manual).
Then try pairing with the PC again.
  1. Bluetooth on the computer is off
Sometimes the Bluetooth module turns off due to power settings or an accidental key combination (e.g., Fn + Bluetooth key).
    Check:
  • Settings → Devices → Bluetooth & other devices → make sure Bluetooth is On.
If the module doesn’t appear at all, it’s likely a driver issue (see below).
  1. Incorrect audio output selected
The headphones may be connected, but no sound plays if Windows hasn’t switched to them automatically.
  • Right-click the speaker icon in the system tray → “Open Sound Settings.”
  • Under Output, select your headphones.
  • Do the same under Input if using the mic.
  1. Bluetooth driver issues
If nothing works, the adapter driver may be at fault—especially after a Windows update or third-party software installation.
    Fix:
  • Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update → Check for updates.
  • Or manually: Device Manager → Bluetooth → right-click your adapter → “Update driver” → “Search automatically.”
  • The most reliable method is to delete the device (right-click → “Uninstall”), restart the PC, and let Windows reinstall the driver.
If still not working, download the driver from the laptop or Bluetooth adapter manufacturer’s website and install it manually.

Wired Headphones: Why the PC Might Not Detect Them

Wired models have fewer causes, but they tend to be more serious:

  1. Physical damage
    Check that:
  • The plug is fully inserted into the port.
  • The cable isn’t bent, frayed, or damaged.
  • The port is clean (use a toothpick or cotton swab with alcohol).
Test the headphones on another device:
  • If they work elsewhere, the issue is the PC’s port.
  • If they don’t work, the headphones are broken.
  1. Incorrect audio output
As with Bluetooth, Windows may still route sound through the internal speakers.
  • Sound settings → Output → select your headphones.
  1. Sound card issues
Sometimes drivers (Realtek, Conexant, or integrated motherboard audio) fail after updates.
    Fix:
  • Device Manager → Sound, video, and game controllers → right-click the sound card → “Update driver” or “Uninstall device” → restart.
  • Or download the latest driver from the motherboard/laptop manufacturer’s website.

In Brief

The computer usually doesn’t see headphones for three main reasons: they’re connected to another device, Bluetooth is off, or the wrong output is selected.

  • For wireless headphones: try resetting, disconnecting from other devices, and checking Bluetooth settings.
  • For wired headphones: check the cable and port and select the correct audio output.
  • If all else fails, update or reinstall the Bluetooth or audio drivers.

In 90% of cases, the problem is resolved within 5 minutes without needing service.
