OpenAI is preparing its own AI headphones Sweetpea: What is known about the project

OpenAI the creators of ChatGPT are planning to enter the consumer electronics market with their own wireless headphones under the code name Sweetpea. According to ChinaZ citing sources inside the company the project is being developed in a closed mode and is considered one of OpenAI’s key hardware directions for the coming years.

Design and form factor

Sweetpea will not be ordinary earbuds. According to available information this will be a wearable accessory with two small capsules placed behind the ears and a metal charging case of an unusual shape smooth and resembling a polished stone. This design is intended to make the device stand out among competitors and emphasize its premium positioning.

Technical features

The device is expected to use a 2 nanometer Exynos processor likely from Samsung although OpenAI is also exploring the possibility of creating its own custom chip. Foxconn is mentioned as a potential contract manufacturer which would be consistent with its long history of working with major technology brands.

The main feature of Sweetpea is deep integration with ChatGPT and other OpenAI models. The headphones are expected to provide instant voice access to AI contextual understanding of conversations and real time personalized suggestions.

Ambitious plans until 2028

Inside the company a long term roadmap has already been formed. By 2028 OpenAI plans to release five hardware products. The first of them Sweetpea is scheduled to be announced in September 2026. The target sales volume for the first year is 40 to 50 million units which is extremely ambitious for a newcomer in the wearable device market.

There is also information that Jony Ive the legendary designer who led Apple’s design team for many years and created the look of many of its iconic products may be involved in developing the design of these devices.
