WhatsApp gets a new convenient feature: Built-in message translations now available for Android and iPhone

September 25, 2025  14:58

WhatsApp has rolled out a new feature — built-in message translation, available directly within the app. Users can now translate messages into other languages without leaving the chat. The update is already being released for Android and iPhone devices, making communication in private chats, groups, and channels easier.

How Does Translation Work?

To translate a message written in a foreign language:

  1. Hold down the message.
  2. Select the “Translate”
  3. Choose the desired language.

Users can save their selected language for automatic translation in the future. On Android, there is a unique mode: automatic translation of the entire conversation within a chat, allowing messages to be viewed instantly in the native language.

Privacy remains a priority: translations are performed locally on the device, without sending data to WhatsApp servers.

Supported Languages

At launch, the feature supports:

  • Android: 6 languages — English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic.
  • iPhone: over 19 languages, including these and additional ones (the full list has not yet been disclosed).

Developers promise to expand the list of supported languages in upcoming updates.

Who Benefits Most?

The new feature makes it easier to:

  • Communicate internationally: chat with friends or colleagues in different languages.
  • Group chats: translate messages from participants across various countries.
  • Channels: understand content in foreign languages.

This is especially relevant for users in multilingual regions, such as Russia, where conversations often mix Russian, English, and other languages.

Rollout and Future Plans

The update is already available to some iPhone and Android users, with full rollout expected in the coming weeks. WhatsApp plans to:

  • Add support for more languages.
  • Improve translation algorithms for greater accuracy.
  • Extend the feature to other platforms, including WhatsApp Web.

In Short…

Built-in translations on WhatsApp are a step toward more convenient and accessible communication. The feature, which works locally, currently supports up to 19 languages and simplifies conversations in chats and channels. It is especially useful for multilingual communities, while Android’s automatic chat translation makes the messenger even more practical. WhatsApp continues to strengthen its position as a universal communication tool.
