Apple to start producing its own screens in 2024, to abandon Samsung and LG developments

Apple plans to start production of its own screens and use them on its smartwatches and mobile devices already in 2024. This will help reduce the company's dependence on screens made by partners such as Samsung and LG.

As Bloomberg reports, citing informed sources, the new Apple Watch models will start switching to self-made microLED screens from the end of next year. Now they are equipped with third-party OLED screens, namely, South Korean giants Samsung Display and LG Display.

The new manufacturing technology is expected to make smartwatch screens brighter and improve color reproduction, especially when viewing the screen at an angle.

The first rumors that Apple might start producing its own displays for smartwatches appeared in 2018, but its foundation was laid earlier, in 2014, when Apple absorbed LuxVue, a company that develops microLED displays.

Apple had hoped to start using microLED displays in large-screen devices as early as 2020, but technical difficulties arose and the company decided to start testing with compact-sized displays, such as those used in smartwatches.

Deliveries of Apple smartwatches with new types of screens can start already in 2025. Mass production of the MicroLED displays will likely be done by a third-party contractor, although Apple is developing them in-house.

In the coming years, self-made screens will also appear in other Apple devices. A new type of microLED-like display may also be used in the mixed reality device, which is expected by the fall of this year. In a year, according to experts' predictions, iPad Pro tablets will get new screens, and after a few years—the iPhones, too.
