A new feature called Quick Recap has appeared in the beta version of WhatsApp for Android. It allows users to generate brief summaries of conversations. This feature enables users to quickly catch up on the essence of missed messages without having to scroll through long chats. The update was reported by the WABetaInfo portal.
The new button is located in the Chats tab and lets users select up to five conversations to generate a condensed summary. The app uses built-in artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze unread messages and create a brief overview, significantly saving time. To use the feature, users need to:
The feature is especially useful for active group chats or lengthy personal conversations where important messages might be missed.
The developers have paid particular attention to data protection. Quick Recap uses Private Processing technology, which ensures that all message analysis happens in an encrypted and isolated environment. This means that neither WhatsApp nor its parent company Meta has access to the content of messages or the generated summaries. Moreover, chats protected by Advanced Chat Privacy settings are automatically excluded from processing.
The feature is completely optional and turned off by default. To activate Quick Recap, users must manually enable it in the app’s settings, offering an extra layer of privacy control.
Currently, Quick Recap is under development and available only in the beta version of WhatsApp for Android, build number 2.25.21.12, which can be installed through the Google Play Beta Program. It’s not yet available to all users, but is expected to roll out in the stable version of the app in the coming months. There is no information yet on when it will arrive on iOS, but given WhatsApp’s cross-platform strategy, it will likely be available for iPhone users as well.
Quick Recap continues the development of AI-powered tools in WhatsApp, following the earlier Message Summaries feature, which summarizes unread messages in a single chat (currently available in the U.S.). The new option expands on that functionality by covering multiple conversations at once, making it convenient for users who want to quickly catch up after being away from the app.
Quick Recap is a step forward in making WhatsApp more user-friendly. It helps users save time by simplifying the way they interact with large volumes of messages, while maintaining a high level of privacy through Private Processing technology. Beta users can already try out the new feature, and it will become available to the general public in the near future. This update highlights WhatsApp’s commitment to integrating modern AI technologies while prioritizing user data protection.
