On which smartphones will WhatsApp stop working from January 1, 2025?

From January 1, 2025, the WhatsApp messenger will stop working on a number of older Android smartphones running Android KitKat or earlier versions of the operating system. At least 19 models of devices released more than ten years ago will be affected, as reported by GSMArena.

What devices will not support WhatsApp

Support will end for previously popular models from manufacturers such as Samsung, Motorola, HTC, LG and Sony. Among them:

• Samsung Galaxy S3 and Note 2
• Motorola Moto G (1st generation)
• HTC One X
• LG Optimus G
• Nexus 4
• Several models of the Sony Xperia series

Why Meta made this decision

Meta explained its actions by the need to ensure the operation of new WhatsApp features. Many of them, including those based on artificial intelligence, require more modern hardware specifications.

What should users of older devices do?

Owners of the listed smartphones are advised to transfer WhatsApp data (chat history and media files) to new devices before the end of 2024. Otherwise, the information will be lost without the possibility of recovery.

Similar changes for iPhone

In addition to Android devices, Meta plans to stop supporting older iPhone models. This will happen in May 2025, when WhatsApp will stop working on devices with iOS versions below 15.1.
