OpenAI introduces GPT-4o Mini: What is it capable of?

July 19, 2024  10:10

OpenAI has released a new language model called GPT-4o Mini, which is a simplified and more accessible version of the flagship GPT-4o model.

According to CNBC, despite the lower cost of use, the GPT-4o Mini outperforms the GPT-3.5 model. Therefore, it is perfect for developers who are looking for a balance between cost and functionality. Developing apps based on OpenAI language models can be expensive, so many developers have previously opted for more affordable alternatives such as Google's Gemini 1.5 Flash or Anthropic's Claude 3 Haiku. However, the launch of GPT-4o Mini makes the market more competitive and accessible to more users.

Functionality

The new GPT-4o Mini model supports text, images, audio and video content. It is designed to solve simple problems and can be useful for adding various highly specialized functions to third-party applications.

Test results

In the standard MMLU (Massive Multitask Language Understanding) test, OpenAI's new language model scored 82%. In comparison, the GPT-3.5 model scored 70%, GPT-4o scored 88.7%, and Gemini Ultra scored 90%. These results confirm that the GPT-4o Mini is a powerful tool that can successfully compete with other models on the market.

Availability for users

Starting July 18, ChatGPT users on Free, Plus and Team plans can use GPT-4o Mini instead of GPT-3.5 Turbo. Users on the Enterprise tariff will receive this opportunity next week. It's important to note that GPT-3.5 will no longer be available to ChatGPT users, but developers will still be able to use it via the associated API if they do not plan to migrate to GPT-4o Mini.
