WhatsApp has stopped working on some Nokia phones

WhatsApp has stopped working on certain devices running on KaiOS 2.5.4 and later versions, as discovered by Reddit users. One owner of a Nokia 6300 4G reported that the messenger stopped launching on his phone (app version 2.2329.13; KaiOS 2.5.4) — attempts to reset the phone and reinstall the app did not help.

The issue turned out to be widespread: after installing WhatsApp version 2.2329.13 on KaiOS, users could not log into their accounts — the app displays a "Something went wrong" message without further details. It later became clear that the problem mainly affected new users, while those who were already logged in continued to use the messenger.

Some tried to bypass the issue by installing an older version of WhatsApp 2.2329.10, which required changing the phone's date to a period between June 28 and July 1, logging in, and then updating to the latest version through KaiStore. However, when verifying the phone number, the app checks the time and version, resulting in a "critical error" that prevents login.

One phone owner managed to get a response from KaiOS support. It turned out that only those who logged in before June 25, 2024, can use WhatsApp — for them, the app will stop working in early 2025. WhatsApp updates for KaiOS will no longer be released, and the messenger has been removed from the KaiOS app store, making it impossible to install it again — a corresponding statement soon appeared on the platform's official website.

The WhatsApp shutdown affected phones such as JioPhone, JioPhone 2, Nokia 800 Tough, Nokia 2720 Flip, Nokia 2760 Flip, Nokia 2780 Flip, Nokia 6300 4G, Nokia 8000 4G, and Nokia 8110 4G, as well as some Alcatel and Energizer models. The messenger will also stop working on KaiOS 3.0, but those who have already logged into their account will be able to use it until February 2025. No statements were made by WhatsApp's administration.
