WhatsApp messenger will soon have a new feature for translating chat messages, which in Telegram requires a paid Premium subscription.

According to the WABetaInfo portal, the innovation was discovered in the beta version of WhatsApp for Android under number 2.24.15.9. With this feature, users will be able to automatically translate all messages in an approved chat into the language of their choice.

Translation technology

Most likely, the WhatsApp team is developing its own translation technology for this function, although it was initially believed that the innovation would use Google live translation. Translation of messages will be processed locally on the device, which guarantees the safety of users, since the text will not be transmitted to the company’s servers. However, this will require downloading language packs.

Supported languages

At the initial stage, only five languages will be supported: Russian, English, Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil) and Hindi. In the future it is planned to expand the list of supported languages.

As noted, a similar feature already exists in Telegram, however, to use dynamic translation, users need to have an active Telegram Premium subscription. This feature will be available for free on WhatsApp.

It should be noted that the chat message translation feature is still under development and it is not yet known when it will be available to all WhatsApp users.
