Will new Android phones be more powerful than the iPhone 14 Pro?

September 21, 2022  10:38

The recently released iPhone 14 Pro is considered one of the most powerful smartphones to date. There is, however, an opinion that the new Android phones that will be released in early 2023 could prove to be more powerful and better.

Better performance?

Many 2022 flagship Android phones use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 (or Plus upgrade) chipset. A new version of this chipset, which is rumored to offer even better performance, could be out by the end of this year, and it is the one that many new Android flagship models will be running on.

According to Android Central, that cites a Digital Chat Station informant, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will have an “ultra-high frequency version” that can clock up to 3.4-3.5 GHz (the current version has a clock speed of 3.2 GHz). More performance gains are also expected in terms of graphics capabilities: these are expected to be much higher than anything the Apple A16 Bionic chip can offer in the new iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Since the A16 Bionic chip actually has a really high performance, it is hard to say yet if the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 smartphones will really be even cooler. Besides, smartphone performance depends not only on the pure speed of the chipset: the software code, the amount of available RAM, and proper temperature management also play an important role.

Which smartphones will feature Snapdragon 8 Gen 2?

A quick look at Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 phones might suggest which devices might get its successor: the Samsung Galaxy S22, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, Xiaomi 12 Pro, OnePlus 10 Pro, Sony Xperia 1 IV, and many others.

One of the first in line to receive the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 could be the OnePlus 11. The phone is expected to arrive in early 2023 and all of its specs will match Qualcomm's new high-performance processor.

Qualcomm has scheduled the Snapdragon Summit for November 15-17, and during the event, we will learn all about the next-generation chipset and what it is actually capable of. Then we will get a better idea of how the new chipset will affect the speed of 2023 Android flagships. When the OnePlus 11 and Samsung Galaxy S23 come out, we will finally be able to compare them with the iPhone 14 Pro and find out if they really have serious advantages compared to Apple's flagship.
