Almost every smartphone, tablet, and monitor now comes with a "night mode" that makes the display warmer and reduces the proportion of blue light. This has led many to assume that a standard screen is inherently harmful. In reality, the issue is more nuanced. The effect of digital devices should be considered as three separate problems: possible retinal damage, eye strain, and impact on sleep. And in far from all cases does colour play the decisive role.
Why Blue Light in Particular Is DiscussedBlue light is part of the visible spectrum. It is present not only in screens but also in sunlight, which people encounter every day. It is discussed for two reasons. First, short-wavelength radiation has higher photon energy, and under very intense and prolonged exposure it could theoretically participate more actively in photochemical processes in ocular tissues. Second, the human internal clock is particularly sensitive to this part of the spectrum: in the evening, such light can signal to the body that the day is not yet over.
However, colour is only one factor. Intensity, duration of exposure, distance to the screen, and ambient lighting conditions also matter.
Do Ordinary Screens Damage the Retina?The International Commission on Illumination (CIE) does not confirm a high risk of retinal damage during normal use of smartphones, monitors, and laptops. Reports of "proven harm" often rely on experiments with cells, molecules, or animals. These help clarify possible mechanisms, but they do not prove that a person receives a dose sufficient to cause damage from their device.
This can be loosely compared to X-ray radiation: large doses are dangerous, while small doses are used in medicine. What matters is not only the type of radiation but also its quantity. In everyday screen use, we are talking about relatively low levels.
Why Eyes Get Tired from ScreensEye strain is almost unrelated to the blue part of the spectrum. It arises from how a person looks at any close object—whether a glowing screen or the page of an e-reader. The gaze remains focused at a single distance for extended periods, blinking becomes less frequent or incomplete, and the eye's surface dries out faster. The situation is worsened by glare, excessively high or low brightness, small fonts, awkward posture, and uncorrected vision problems.
What helps is not so much a "eye protection mode" as a properly arranged workspace. Brightness should be adjusted so the screen neither appears as a glaring patch nor a dark rectangle against the room. Eliminate glare, increase text size, position the screen slightly below eye level, and periodically look into the distance. The popular 20–20–20 rule (every 20 minutes, look for 20 seconds at an object 6 metres away) is not a strict medical standard, but it reflects a simple principle: continuous close-up work should be interrupted regularly.
How Screens Affect SleepIn the evening, all light entering the eyes affects circadian rhythms. Cool white light with a high proportion of blue components may have a stronger effect, but again colour is only one factor. Brightness, duration of use, time of day, room illumination, and how much light a person received during the daytime all matter as well. Sensitivity to evening light varies among individuals.
Studies yield different results depending on the conditions. In one experiment, several hours of reading on a bright screen before bed shifted the biological night by about an hour and a half. In another, two hours on a tablet after bright daytime illumination did not noticeably alter subsequent sleep. Therefore, a universal ban—"do not look at the phone after a certain hour"—cannot be drawn from these data.
Furthermore, a device can interfere with falling asleep even without its light effect. Notifications, messages, and endless scrolling simply hold attention, causing people to go to bed later. Night mode does not solve that problem.
Is Night Mode Useful?Warmer tints do reduce the share of short-wavelength light and may be gentler on the internal clock. But a bright yellowish screen remains a source of light, especially if viewed for long periods and from close range. So while enabling night mode is helpful, it is not enough if brightness stays high and pre‑bed screen time stretches for hours.
Should You Fear Blue Light?In short—no. By itself, blue light from ordinary screens does not damage the retina under everyday use. Far more often, discomfort arises from prolonged uninterrupted work, high brightness, infrequent breaks, and evening "doomscrolling." Night mode may be beneficial for sleep, but it does not replace the need to manage brightness, viewing distance, lighting, and overall screen‑time hygiene.
In BriefBlue light from screens is often considered dangerous, but under normal use it has not been proven to damage the retina. Eye strain is primarily linked to sustained near‑distance focusing, reduced blinking, and poor working conditions, not to colour. Sleep is affected by all evening light, especially when bright, as well as by the habit of staying on the phone late. Night mode reduces the blue‑light fraction and may help, but it does not replace sensible limits on brightness and pre‑bedtime screen use.
