The indie game Meccha Chameleon became one of the biggest commercial surprises of 2026. At the end of June, it ranked second among the most profitable PC games, trailing only the free-to-play Fortnite. This was reported by GamesIndustry.biz, citing data from Newzoo.
An incredible result for an indie project
The game was released on June 10 exclusively on Steam and sold over 15 million copies in its first month alone. The project was created by just two developers — lemorion_1224 and Haganeiro — without the involvement of a major publisher.
Also in the top 20 most profitable games for June were Counter-Strike 2, The Sims 4, Marvel Rivals, Dead by Daylight, Forza Horizon 6, Destiny 2, World of Warcraft, Minecraft, Cyberpunk 2077, Diablo IV, and other major titles.
Why the game took off
Newzoo analyst Mert Şahin noted that the success of Meccha Chameleon demonstrates the growing potential of affordable social multiplayer games. Even projects with small budgets can compete with blockbusters if they offer a unique experience and a strong social component.
The gameplay itself is an unusual variation of classic hide-and-seek: players disguise themselves as environmental elements, using a mechanic reminiscent of a chameleon's ability to change its appearance.
Player reviews
At the time of publication, Meccha Chameleon has over 66,000 reviews on Steam, 86% of which are positive. High ratings and a viral effect helped the game quickly gain popularity.
In brief
The indie game Meccha Chameleon, created by just two developers, became the second most profitable PC game in June 2026, trailing only Fortnite. In its first month after release, it sold over 15 million copies. The project's success shows that even small teams can compete with major studios if they offer original and social gameplay. The game received high user ratings on Steam.
