Many owners notice that new televisions last less than models from 10–15 years ago. Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Nanoelectronics at RTU MIREA Alexei Yurasov explained that the issue is not deliberate lifespan reduction but rather the increased complexity of the design.
Main causes of accelerated wear
Miniaturization and component density — Modern televisions have become significantly more compact. Manufacturers place more chips, processors, and modules in a limited space. This increases the demands on heat dissipation. Regular overheating accelerates the aging of semiconductors, capacitors, and other components.
Round-the-clock operation — Most modern devices, including televisions, are constantly in standby mode or operating 24/7. Components continuously experience thermal and electrical stress, consuming their lifespan more quickly.
Software dependency — Today, a television is not just a "picture box" but a complex system with built-in software. Even a fully functional device can become useless if it stops receiving updates or supporting new applications or services. Users in such cases often consider the technology obsolete.
Modern TVs are not worse — they are more complex
The expert emphasizes that new models have not become less reliable by nature. They simply perform significantly more tasks: they handle high resolutions, support smart functions, process complex content, and constantly interact with the network.

Modern televisions break faster not because of "planned obsolescence" but due to increased design complexity, miniaturization, and continuous standby operation. The growing number of components and software dependency also shorten the actual service life. At the same time, new devices perform far more functions than older technology.
