The city as a mycelium: What human housing will look like in 500 Years

When we try to look half a millennium into the future, mass culture stubbornly pushes the same image upon us: endless tiers of neon skyscrapers, steel canyons, and flying cars straight out of science fiction. However, researchers agree that the monolithic, ultra-dense megacity we are used to—like Tokyo or New York—is an evolutionary dead end. Instead of endlessly expanding concrete borders, humanity is moving toward a planetary network where technology and biology will permanently merge into a single fabric.

The death of distance and the birth of a planetary network

We are used to thinking that the future belongs to giant cities that expand outward and consume everything around them. Yet, UN demographic reports clear a counter-trend: small and medium-sized cities are currently growing the fastest and absorbing the population, rather than ultra-large agglomerations. If we extend this trend 500 years into the future, cities will stop expanding across the land altogether. As the renowned sociologist and media theorist Benjamin Bratton argues in his concept of "The Stack," humanity will abandon the idea of giant megacities in favor of a structure resembling an internet network or a distributed mycelium.

In his view, instead of continuous horizontal urban sprawl, the planet will be covered by compact "nodes." These will be highly dense, sky-high tower-cities containing absolutely everything needed for life: from housing and work to parks and farms. Between these isolated towers, stretching for thousands of kilometers around, wild, intentionally restored nature—forests, oceans, and mountains—will thrive, no longer paved over with asphalt by humans.

Living in such an isolated node in the middle of the wilderness would be impossible if not for technologies that will completely erase the concept of distance. Projects like Hyperloop vacuum trains, developed to a planetary scale, will allow travel between continents underground in a matter of minutes. Simultaneously, total telepresence systems—currently being developed by MIT labs and virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) pioneers—will eliminate the need for constant physical travel. Physical distance will lose its economic meaning: a person will be able to sit peacefully in their tower on the site of modern-day Bogotá, while their digital avatar works or conducts meetings in a computing hub in Tokyo.

Architecture as a living organism

These nodes themselves will cease to be passive boxes of concrete and steel. The architecture of the future is pure biology. Futurological forecasts, architectural manifestos, and speculative visual projects (such as the "Earth 2525" concept) describe cities as closed ecosystems. Due to climate change, they will have to be grown rather than built. The well-known professor of experimental architecture Rachel Armstrong, a leader in the "Living Architecture" movement, is already proving today that the use of synthetic biology will allow buildings to grow and process waste on their own. Modern biomimicry technologies confirm this hypothesis. For instance, the developments by microbiologist Henk Jonkers from the Delft University of Technology on creating bio-concrete with special bacterial spores show that in 500 years, buildings will be able to literally "heal" their own cracks after earthquakes.

Simply put, current developments in biomimicry and "smart materials" will turn buildings into semi-living organisms in 500 years. Tower facades will be covered with genetically modified moss that absorbs carbon dioxide and generates oxygen during the day, and glows with bioluminescent light at night, completely replacing conventional street lamps. Each such autonomous district will power itself using solar and geothermal energy through localized microgrids, while vertical farms on the middle floors will make food imports a thing of the past.

The rule of the invisible algorithm

Naturally, a human bureaucracy will not be able to manage such a complex living machine. Smart cities researchers note that power will definitively shift to distributed artificial intelligence systems. This invisible management analyzes terabytes of data in real time from all Internet of Things (IoT) sensors: from the wear and tear of magnetic tracks to the stress levels and heart rates of citizens.

The AI automatically regulates water supply, alters the street lighting spectrum to reduce aggression, and redirects autonomous logistics flows, which will entirely move from ground level into the air and underground. We can see the first timid prototypes of this approach today in real "greenfield" projects, such as the linear city The Line (the NEOM project in Saudi Arabia) or the high-tech city concept Telosa in the US, where management is initially embedded at the level of digital algorithms.

The "black box" paradox and the new castes

However, this ideal order generates a profound social and political crisis, which modern sociologists and cybersecurity experts actively warn about. Urbanists call it "Black Box Politics." Algorithms distribute resources and manage migration with flawless efficiency, but the logic behind their decisions is hidden from humans. Code becomes law that cannot be challenged in court because a human is simply incapable of processing the vast volume of variables considered by the machine.

This also changes the very structure of society. In long-term scenarios, analysts suggest that instead of dividing by wealth—which will be neutralized by automation and universal basic income—humanity will split based on the degree of integration into this technological environment:

The Integrated: People with deep neuromodifications whose nervous systems are directly connected to the city-wide network. The surrounding space reacts to them physically: doors open before they even approach them, and the air temperature adjusts to their current body temperature based on a mental impulse. They virtually merge with the city's infrastructure.

The Unplugged: Subcultures and communities that have chosen digital sovereignty. They consciously retreat to the periphery of the network, build houses from simple materials, and maintain privacy from AI, preferring traditional, noisy human democracy over flawless machine surveillance.
