Hamster has announced that the classic game Bokosuka Wars will join the Console Archives lineup and become available on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 on June 25. The re-release will be priced at $7.99 or 800 yen, Gematsu reports.
For modern players, this is an opportunity to experience one of the most unusual games of the mid-1980s, while retro fans get a chance to revisit a project that many consider one of the early predecessors of the tactical RPG genre.
A Game Ahead of Its TimeBokosuka Wars was released by ASCII in 1985 for 8-bit home gaming systems. At the time of its release, the project stood out due to its unique blend of role-playing, strategy, and action elements.
The player takes on the role of King Suren, ruler of the eponymous kingdom that has been conquered by Tyrant Ogret—the ruler of the Basamu Empire.
According to the plot, King Ogret used magic to turn many of Suren's warriors into trees and rocks. Advancing through enemy territories, the player must free their soldiers and lead them toward Basamu Castle to ultimately confront the main antagonist and restore peace to the kingdom.
It was this unusual combination of army management and the main hero's direct participation in battles that made the game a notable phenomenon for its time.
Console Archives: New Life for an Old ClassicThe re-release is launching as part of the Console Archives series, which aims to adapt classic console games for modern platforms.
The developers did not stop at a simple port of the original version. The updated edition includes features that have become standard for modern retro releases: button remapping options, rapid-fire button configuration, multiple save slots, and a rewind feature for certain games in the series.
These tools are designed to make playing older titles more accessible and comfortable for a modern audience, especially given the high difficulty typical of many 1980s games.
CRT Filter and Other Display SettingsSpecial attention has been paid to the visual aspect. Players will be able to change the display format and apply special filters that simulate the look of old CRT televisions, on which these games were originally played.
Such configurations have long been a staple of retro re-releases, allowing players to either replicate the original experience as closely as possible or adapt it for modern high-resolution screens.
In BriefThe cult classic Bokosuka Wars, originally released in 1985 by ASCII, will launch on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 on June 25. The re-release will be part of the Console Archives series and will feature modern quality-of-life improvements, including save slots, button remapping, and CRT-style visual filters. The game is considered an early experiment at the intersection of strategy and RPG, remaining a notable piece of Japanese gaming history.
