NASA reveals new details about Artemis III, but major decisions still lie ahead

NASA has officially confirmed that the third crewed mission in the Artemis program will take place in Earth orbit and remains scheduled for 2027. The flight is now being positioned as a critical rehearsal mission ahead of a future lunar landing rather than the landing itself.

The decision to move Artemis III from lunar orbit to low Earth orbit was made in part to preserve the final upper cryogenic propulsion stage for the later Artemis IV mission, which is expected to carry out the program’s first crewed lunar landing.

What changes in the mission plan

Instead of attempting a full Moon landing, Artemis III will send four astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft using the Space Launch System rocket. Once in Earth orbit, Orion is expected to rendezvous with one or both lunar landers currently being developed by private companies: SpaceX’s Starship and Blue Origin’s Blue Moon Mark 2.

Jeremy Parsons, acting associate administrator for NASA’s Moon to Mars program, said the mission would mark the first time the agency coordinates multiple spacecraft launches while integrating new Artemis operational capabilities. According to NASA, the goal is to rehearse interactions between Orion, the crew, ground teams, and hardware from both landing-system providers before astronauts attempt an actual lunar descent.

Echoes of Apollo 9

In many ways, Artemis III resembles Apollo 9, the 1969 mission during which astronauts separated the lunar module from the main spacecraft, tested maneuvers independently, and then successfully docked again. NASA now plans to conduct similar docking and operational tests involving Orion and the new lunar landing systems.

However, the scope of those tests remains unclear. NASA stated only that astronauts could potentially enter at least one test version of a lunar lander. That wording suggests the crew may not actually perform a full operational transfer, engine test, or undocking sequence involving Starship or Blue Moon.

NASA’s central dilemma

NASA now faces a difficult trade-off. If Artemis III launches in late 2027 as planned, the rendezvous may involve relatively immature prototype spacecraft—essentially pathfinder vehicles that may not yet include complete life-support systems.

An earlier mission would allow NASA and its partners to gain operational experience more quickly. But it also clashes with one of aerospace engineering’s core principles: test hardware under the same conditions in which it will ultimately fly.

A later launch date would give developers more time to mature the lunar landers and the next-generation spacesuits being built by Axiom Space. At the same time, further delays could slow the entire Artemis program and weaken the United States’ momentum in the renewed lunar race with China.

NASA administrator nominee Jared Isaacman has repeatedly emphasized that the race to return humans to the Moon will likely be measured in months rather than years.
