Google announced on Tuesday that the Gemini app can now create and export downloadable files directly during a conversation—eliminating the need to copy, paste, and reformat AI-generated content in other applications.
From Chat to a Ready-to-Use Document
The update allows users to ask Gemini to generate ready-to-use files in various formats: Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, as well as PDF, Microsoft Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx), CSV, LaTeX, plain text, RTF, and Markdown. For example, you can ask Gemini to turn a budget into an Excel spreadsheet or format notes as a PDF—and download the result immediately without switching to another app.
This feature addresses one of the most common requests since Gemini's launch: the ability to generate a file and download it directly from the chat. Until now, users had to manually copy Gemini’s responses into a separate application and handle the formatting themselves.
Global Rollout and Limitations
Google stated that the feature will begin rolling out in phases to all Gemini app users worldwide starting April 29. Those who do not see it immediately will gain access later as part of the gradual rollout.
One notable limitation is the absence of direct export to Microsoft PowerPoint. Users who need a .ppt file can first export the presentation to Google Slides and then download it in PowerPoint format.
Part of a Major Update The file generation feature arrives amid a wave of Gemini updates released by Google throughout April 2026. Earlier this month, the company introduced notebooks for organizing chats and projects, a native Mac app, personalized image generation based on Google Photos, and music creation via Lyria 3 Pro. In March, Google also radically updated Gemini's capabilities in Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive, adding an AI content creation feature that utilizes data from Gmail, Chat, and Drive files.
The file generation update was first spotted by NokiaPowerUser on April 27; the publication noted support for ZIP archiving and the display of files directly within the chat interface.
