2025 was a year of breakthroughs, from revolutionary indie hits to AAA masterpieces powered by AI. But behind the scenes were real disasters: projects with multimillion-dollar budgets, legendary names, and massive expectations that collapsed with a loud crash. Metacritic compiled a top 10 list of the lowest-rated releases of the year (at least four critic reviews), including mobile games, VR titles, and DLC. These are not forgotten indie experiments, but potential hits that let everyone down. From a GTA clone that became a meme of shame to remakes that should never have been touched. Let’s go through them in order, starting with the absolute champion of the anti-rating.
MindsEye on PS5 is not just a failure, but an epic catastrophe with a score of 28. Leslie Benzies, former president of Rockstar (GTA III–V), founded IO Interactive Partners and promised a sci-fi “GTA killer” set in a cyber-augmented Las Vegas. What players got instead was a buggy, boring action game with outdated mission design and a sense of emptiness. “One of the worst games of the modern era, clearly unfinished,” said Metro GameCentral without restraint. Sony issued refunds, Steam reviews went negative, and the game became a year-long embarrassment.
Fire Emblem Shadows on iOS scored 37 points. This strange mobile spin-off of Nintendo’s tactical series ventured into the social deduction genre, similar to Among Us. Fans were shocked: why is this Fire Emblem at all? A paid, microtransaction-heavy game with shallow gameplay. “Not for Fire Emblem fans and hard to recommend to anyone,” wrote GameSpot. Nintendo released an exclusive on a non-Nintendo platform and paid for it with reputational damage.
Blood of Mehran (PS5) earned 38 points. An indie hack-and-slash inspired by One Thousand and One Nights with epic ambitions. “It’s hard to find anything positive… a soulless, derivative action game,” wrote GameOver.gr. Dated visuals and a weak story made it a textbook example of an unfinished project.
Spy Drops (PC) received 39 points. A low-budget Metal Gear Solid clone with PS1-era graphics and random missions. “A complete disappointment in every aspect,” according to Finger Guns. Camera, AI, bugs: everything feels like 1998, but without the charm.
Gore Doctor (PS5) scored 40 points. A horror simulator about a mad doctor. “Cheap, clunky, and poorly presented,” said PlayStation Country. An awkward engine and a lack of fun turned away even horror fans.
Tamagotchi Plaza on Nintendo Switch 2 got 43 points. A remake of mini-games about virtual pets from the Nintendo DS era. “A dull, bland collection that gets boring quickly,” wrote Nintendo Life. Fine for small children, but at full price it feels like a rip-off.
Ambulance Life (PS5) landed at 44 points. A paramedic simulator from the team behind Police Simulator. “A clunky engine and a complete lack of fun,” said IGN Turkey. Driving mechanics and mini-games turn into pure routine.
QUByte Classics: Glover (PS5) and Scar-Lead Salvation (PS5) both scored 44 points. Glover is a remake of the N64 platformer about a glove and “disappointing in every way.” Scar-Lead is an “anime Returnal,” described as “a generic roguelike with unrealized potential.”
Fast & Furious: Arcade Edition (PS5) finished with 45 points. Arcade racing based on the film franchise. “A shadow of the good games in the genre,” according to PSX Brasil. About an hour of content for a 30 dollar price tag.
Why 2025 became a year of such failures
The year proved that rushing kills quality. MindsEye could have been a hit but launched unfinished. Remakes like Glover failed to justify nostalgia, while experiments like Fire Emblem Shadows got lost between genres. Low-budget titles like Spy Drops and simulators like Ambulance Life suffered from a lack of polish. The overall trend points to mobile games and ports packed with microtransactions, where quantity mattered more than quality.
In brief
The worst games of 2025 according to Metacritic: MindsEye (28), a GTA-style catastrophe; Fire Emblem Shadows (37), a bizarre spin-off; Blood of Mehran (38), an empty hack-and-slash; Spy Drops (39), a Metal Gear clone; Gore Doctor (40), horror without fear; Tamagotchi Plaza (43), soulless mini-games; Ambulance Life (44), pure routine; Glover and Scar-Lead Salvation (44), a remake and a roguelike that fell flat; Fast & Furious Arcade Edition (45), racing without excitement. A year of haste and unfinished releases, where even big names could not save the games.
