ChatGPT turns into a marketplace: Can you shop directly in chat?

September 30, 2025  17:25

OpenAI has launched the Instant Checkout feature, allowing ChatGPT users in the U.S. to purchase products directly inside the chatbot without being redirected to external sites. For now, the feature works only with Etsy sellers, but soon it will expand to over one million Shopify stores. This marks a step toward transforming ChatGPT into a full-fledged AI marketplace, changing the way people shop online.

How Does Instant Checkout Work?

The new feature allows users to:

Search for products with queries such as “best sneakers under $100” or “gifts for pottery lovers.” Choose from the suggested results (ranked by relevance, with no sponsored listings). Tap the “Buy” button, confirm shipping details and payment (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Stripe, or credit card are supported) — all within the chat.

Transactions are secured by the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), developed by OpenAI and Stripe. ACP transfers data safely between buyer and seller. The protocol is open source (Apache 2.0), making it possible for other platforms and developers to integrate with ChatGPT.

Currently, only single-item purchases are supported. In the future, a shopping cart will be added for multiple items, along with expansion beyond the U.S.

Market Impact

The announcement boosted stock prices:

Etsy: +13% (current price $73.625, up from $64.0425 on September 26). Shopify: +5% (current price $149.245, up from $140.43 on September 26).

This reflects strong market enthusiasm: access to ChatGPT’s 700 million weekly users gives sellers an enormous audience.

What Does This Mean for Sellers and Buyers? For buyers: the shopping process becomes simpler — from discovery to purchase in just a few clicks, without unnecessary redirects. The service is free, with no markup on prices. For sellers: Etsy and Shopify retain full control over payments, shipping, and customer service. Merchants pay OpenAI a small transaction fee, though the exact amount has not been disclosed.

Etsy shops are already participating, and Shopify (including brands such as Glossier, SKIMS, and Spanx) will join soon. Sellers don’t need to change their systems — ACP integration is minimal, especially for those already using Stripe.

Why Does This Matter?

Instant Checkout represents a step toward agentic commerce, where AI doesn’t just recommend but also completes transactions. This could:

Redefine e-commerce: shifting away from search engines (Google) and marketplaces (Amazon) toward chatbots with personalized recommendations. Create a new revenue stream for OpenAI: commissions from sales will complement subscription income (ChatGPT Plus/Pro). Change competition: Shopify and Etsy gain an advantage over Amazon, while AI optimization becomes more critical than SEO.

However, risks remain: OpenAI’s concentration of shopping data raises privacy concerns, and success depends on user trust and scalability.

In Short…

ChatGPT is evolving from just a chatbot into a shopping platform with Instant Checkout. For now, it works with Etsy in the U.S., but soon it will expand to Shopify and other regions. Etsy (+13%) and Shopify (+5%) stocks have already reacted to the news. This marks the beginning of agentic commerce, where AI turns chats into storefronts. For global success, OpenAI still needs to prove both security and scalability.
