August 25, 2025  14:41

American entrepreneur and head of Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk, announced the release of the source code for the artificial intelligence model Grok 2.5, developed by his company xAI. He shared the news on social media platform X, adding that the source code for the next model, Grok 3, will be made available in about six months.

Opening the Source Code of Grok 2.5

Grok 2.5, introduced in August 2024, marked a significant step in the development of xAI’s chatbot. Making its source code public allows developers and researchers to study, modify, and use the model for their own projects. The code is available through the Hugging Face platform, ensuring global accessibility for the community.

Musk also announced that the source code for the upcoming Grok 3 will be released in about six months. The first version of Grok was launched in November 2023, and the fourth version was presented in July 2025, highlighting the rapid progress xAI has made in AI development.

Development of AI Companions

Alongside open-sourcing, xAI is actively enhancing Grok’s functionality. According to Business Insider, the company posted a job opening for a software engineer to work on creating AI companions for the chatbot. The listing specified that xAI is seeking “exceptional engineers and product specialists” capable of making Grok avatars fast, scalable, and reliable.

The position offers an annual salary ranging from $180,000 to $440,000, along with equity and additional bonuses. This underscores xAI’s ambition to build advanced AI solutions that can rival systems such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Other xAI Innovations

In July 2025, xAI announced free access to its AI-powered image and video generator, Grok Imagine, for all mobile app users on Android and iOS. Previously, this feature was only available to subscribers of the SuperGrok and X Premium+ plans. The move expands access to Grok’s creative tools, enabling users to generate visual content without extra cost.

However, xAI has also faced setbacks. Forbes reported that more than 370,000 chats with Grok were accidentally made public and indexed by search engines due to a “share” feature, exposing them to open access. This raised concerns over user data privacy, and xAI has not yet commented on the issue.

Why It Matters

The release of Grok 2.5’s source code is a major step toward the democratization of AI. Unlike companies such as OpenAI, which keep their models closed, xAI is betting on openness, allowing the community to contribute to technological progress. This approach could accelerate innovation but also raises questions about safety and ethics in AI use.

In Brief

On August 24, 2025, Elon Musk and xAI took an important step by releasing the source code for Grok 2.5 and announcing the upcoming release of Grok 3 within six months. This decision reflects the company’s commitment to open AI principles. At the same time, xAI is expanding Grok’s capabilities by offering free access to its image generator and hiring specialists to build AI companions. Yet, the data leak incident serves as a reminder of the need for strict privacy safeguards. Open-sourcing Grok 2.5 could become a catalyst for new AI developments, strengthening xAI’s position in the market.
